Amitabh Bachchan’s Enduring Spirit in the Face of Health Challenges

Amitabh Bachchan, often referred to as the “megastar of the century,” continues to inspire people with his unwavering dedication and passion for work, even at an age where many might consider retirement. His ability to keep working with such zeal is rare among actors. However, his life has not been as simple as it may seem. Over the years, Amitabh has faced multiple health challenges that could have dampened his spirit, yet he never let them overcome his determination.

One of the toughest health battles he faced was with a condition called Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease that weakens the muscles and causes extreme fatigue. During the 15th season of the popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati, which he hosts, Amitabh shared his experience of battling this illness. At one point, he even considered quitting acting due to the severity of his condition.

He recounted how director Manmohan Desai offered him a role where he had to use a wheelchair, which gave him hope during this dark period. Myasthenia Gravis made it difficult for Amitabh to perform even basic tasks like drinking water, fastening buttons, or even closing and opening his eyes. Doctors advised him to take medication and rest, but he was left terrified and anxious, wondering how he could continue his career in such a state. Walking and speaking became challenging, adding to his fears about whether he could ever act again.

Myasthenia Gravis affects the muscles and nervous system, causing issues like weakened facial, throat, hand, and leg muscles. This condition can lead to constant fatigue, particularly for those who do not follow a proper diet or manage stress. Experts suggest that the illness stems from a deficiency in certain chemicals in the body, which results in poor muscle function. People of any age, from infants to adults, can suffer from this condition, and the symptoms can severely impact their daily lives.
