The Rise of Lawrence Bishnoi: From Law Student to India’s Most Feared Criminal

Lawrence Bishnoi, once a bright student aiming for a prestigious career, has now emerged as one of India’s most notorious gangsters, with a criminal empire spanning across the country and even internationally. Bishnoi, the son of a Punjab police constable, had aspirations to become a top officer. However, his life took a drastic turn as he ventured into crime, turning his education into a weapon to build his own influence and criminal network.

Early Life and Rise in Crime

Bishnoi was born in Abohar, Punjab, into a family with modest means. His father, a police constable, dreamed that his son would rise to prominence as an IAS, IPS, or IFS officer. With that ambition, Bishnoi was sent to study at DAV College in Chandigarh, where he formed a close friendship with Goldy Brar, another future criminal. While pursuing his LLB, Bishnoi stepped into student politics, creating the Student Organisation of Punjab University (SOPU).

However, his journey took a dark turn when he lost the student union election in 2010 and allegedly sought revenge against a rival group. This incident marked the beginning of Bishnoi’s descent into the world of crime. The first serious case against him was registered in 2011, after a violent altercation with a rival group. Although he was arrested, he was released on bail, and this cycle of arrests, jail time, and subsequent releases continued.

The Evolution of a Criminal Network

By 2012, Bishnoi had been deeply embroiled in several criminal activities, including attempted murder, armed robberies, and organized crime. Despite multiple arrests, Bishnoi managed to build a network of followers, particularly after a violent confrontation with other gangs in Punjab and Haryana. His ability to command respect, even behind bars, became evident when he started managing his criminal operations from within Faridkot jail, using mobile phones and SIM cards.

Over time, Bishnoi’s reach expanded beyond India. His network grew to include shooters and operatives in several states, and he began making connections with criminals outside the country. His association with Goldy Brar, now based in Canada, further strengthened his international ties, making him a significant figure in organized crime.

High-Profile Crimes and Rivalries

Bishnoi’s notoriety skyrocketed after his involvement in several high-profile crimes, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022. This act of revenge was carried out by his gang, with the murder allegedly orchestrated by Goldy Brar from Canada. Bishnoi’s audacity became apparent when he openly threatened Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, linking himself to a new generation of criminals who were not afraid to target prominent figures.

Most recently, Bishnoi’s gang has been involved in the assassination of political figure Baba Siddiqui in Mumbai, a move reminiscent of the power that Dawood Ibrahim once held over the city in the 1990s.

Comparison to Dawood Ibrahim

The comparison between Lawrence Bishnoi and the infamous underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has gained traction. Like Dawood, Bishnoi’s father was a police officer, and both built extensive international criminal networks. Bishnoi has amassed an army of 700 shooters, with 300 coming from Punjab alone, according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). His influence extends to countries like Canada, the U.S., Dubai, and Pakistan, where his associates carry out his bidding.

Bishnoi’s Criminal Empire from Jail

What makes Bishnoi’s case particularly unique is his continued control over his criminal empire from inside prison. He has been jailed in some of the most secure facilities, including Delhi’s Tihar Jail and Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail, but this hasn’t hindered his operations. Bishnoi prefers staying in jail, believing that it provides him a safer environment to manage his illegal activities. His network remains intact, and he has shown no interest in seeking bail, confident that his operations run smoother while he’s incarcerated.

Future Implications

The NIA’s investigation has revealed the true extent of Bishnoi’s empire, describing it as a growing threat similar to the D-Company led by Dawood Ibrahim. With a criminal network that spans across India and beyond, and with dozens of cases but no convictions yet, Bishnoi’s influence shows no signs of waning. His refusal to seek bail and the strength of his network, even from prison, have created a new paradigm for organized crime in India.
