Comedian Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent has been making headlines recently for negative reasons. One of the contestants made fun of Deepika Padukone’s depression in the comedy reality show. The incident attracted a lot of flak towards the contestants as well as the judges over their casual reaction to the joke on mental health. And now the contestant and the judges have landed in trouble once again after another clip from the contestant’s act went viral on the internet.

In the clip, the same participant, named Bunty Banerjee, can be seen poking fun at another sensitive issue, the Kolkata rape-murder case, which shook the nation.

The participant Bunty Banerjee has once again found herself under fire for making a joke about the heinous rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The rape and murder incident shook the nation causing nationwide protests with people taking to the streets to seek justice from the administration.

In the viral video, the participant can be heard saying, “Whenever there’s a tense situation, the Bengali in me sleeps and Bihari wakes up.” She was referring to her roots of being a Bengali born and brought up in Bihar.

She then asked the audience, “Any Bengalis in the house,” adding, “See, sab so rahe hain. Nahi. Thak gaye honge na candle march karte karte (Bengalis are sleeping! Let them. Must be tried by holding candle march protests).” This statement led the panel including Samay Raina, comedian Tanmay Bhat, producer-actor Raghu Ram, neurologist Dr Sid Warrier, and Balraj Singh burst into laughter.

The post was naturally flooded with netizens slamming the bad taste of the comedian. Users commented things like, “So this lady, claiming to be a comedian, at one point of her show, mocks depression and at another point, ridicules Bengalis for holding candlelight marches to protest heinous crimes. It’s appalling that people think such cringeworthy behaviour deserves applause. The joke’s on them,” “The same candle march that the Bengalis do, is for protecting women only. If God forbids, something happens to her, we will be the ones to rise and protest in favour of her to get justice”

Other users noted, “Insensitivity aside, the joke (if it was a joke) was so lame. Are the judges laughing with her? Or laughing at her?” “Oh God! Bless Indians with a good sense of humour and hygiene. Enough of this torture.”

The comedian made jokes about Deepika Padukone’s depression

Earlier a clip from the Bunty’s gig went viral, wherein she was seen making a joke on Deepika Padukone and her advocacy of mental health. During the show, she said, “Deepika Padukone also became a mother recently, right. Great, now she knows what depression really looks like.”

The comment on Deepika Padukone was met with laughter and applause from Samay and the other panellists. The previous clip too had spared backlash for its insensitivity towards mental health issues.
