Deepika Padukone’s mom Ujjala on her strict parenting: My family must have wanted to throw me out

Deepika Padukone has always said that her mother Ujjala has been her guiding voice. Recently, Ujjala Padukone revealed that she had been strict with Deepika and Anisha.

Deepika Padukone’s journey in Bollywood has been an inspiring one. After her blockbuster Om Shanti Om (2007), the actress faced numerous ups and downs. Soon, she found her footing in the industry and had established her mettle with films like Goliyon Ke Rasleela Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani. In 2018, she astonished all with her performance in Padmaavat. Today, Deepika is one of the most bankable actresses in Bollywood.

Deepika says that it has been her mother, Ujjala, who steered her through troubles of fame in Bollywood. In a recent interview, Ujjala said, “I have always believed that a woman should be financially independent, have her own money irrespective of whether her husband is there to take care of her or not. That’s what I did.”

Deepika added that she has learnt a lot from Ujjala. ” I have learnt a lot from her. I donโ€™t think there is a single thing I can do without her voice in my head. Simple things like when I buy something, I remember that she has always told me, find out how much it is for.”

Ujjala acknowledged that she had very strict with Deepika and her sister Anisha. “My dad with his British boarding school background was a very disciplined person, so I grew up with strict rules that I didnโ€™t know I was unconsciously borrowing from! I have been like a strict headmistress. I am sure there have been times when they (her husband and daughters) have wanted to throw me out of the house.”

Just last week, Deepika unveiled her wax statue at Madame Tussauds in London. She had said in an official statement, “As a little girl, I was a very curious kid, for me, a little girl, I was a very curious kid, for me, purpose is something that is very important. However, big or small, whatever I am doing in my life, purpose and why we do what we do is very important to me.”

She added, “After I got a call from Madame Tussauds, I thought what is the purpose of this, why are we doing this, or what is it that my fans will remember me for, remember my figure for, what is it that I would like to leave behind, and the cause of mental health is very close to my heart, it is something that I am extremely passionate about. I said that’s it, I would like for my fans when they see my figure I hope it reminds them of someone who did something for the cause of mental illness, who worked towards creating awareness and destigmatizing mental illness. I hope that it gives people a sense of upliftment and a sense of hope. I hope that message comes through.”
