AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu have decided to part ways after 29 years of their marital bliss. For the unversed, the couple tied the knot in an arranged marriage setup, and it was AR Rahman’s mom who fixed the singer’s marriage with Saira.

They hopped onto the forever journey in 1995, and on November 19, 2024, they announced their divorce. The couple’s separation has come as a shock to their fans, and several of the singer’s interviews about his personal life have been making rounds online. We recently stumbled upon an old interview of AR Rahman, wherein he talked about Saira’s personality.

In an old interview with Simi Garewel, AR Rahman revealed that he didn’t have time to find a suitable partner for him, and for the same reason, he asked his mom to find the perfect bride for him.

The singer also stated that he would want someone who wouldn’t cause much trouble with his singing career and would have some education, beauty, and a whole lot of humility. In the same interview, Rahman was asked about his wife, Saira’s real personality, and he talked about the two sides of his wife.

As per Rahman, if Saira is calm, she’s only calm, but if she gets angry, she is only that. He added that his wife had two sides. He remarked that in the early days of their wedding, she would get frustrated as she couldn’t go shopping.

The singer said that it was a pre-agreement before their marriage that he told her about the unconventional way she would have to opt for after marrying him for his celebrity status. AR Rahman said:

“She is calm, and she’s calm, and when she gets angry, she’s angry. There are two sides of her. Initially, she used to get frustrated… I mean, not going out. You can’t go out for shopping or, you know. I did tell her in the beginning what kind of life she’s going to lead. It was an agreement before.”

AR Rahman revealed that Saira Banu had to make adjustments after their marriage

Talking to Rahmaniac.com, AR Rahman revealed that it’s difficult for a family to adjust to a newcomer, and the same happened when he got married. The singer said that he had a joint family, and a certain amount of necessity needed to be made. Well, AR Rahman further revealed that after the birth of their first child, everything just went back to normal.

AR Rahman and Saira Banu’s marriage was fixed by the singer’s mom. She first met Saira at a shrine and then went to talk to her and ask her hand for marriage. Well, the singer first met Saira on his 28th birthday, and it was a short meet-up.

Following this, the couple started connecting over the phone. Talking about their divorce, their lawyer, Vandana Shah, revealed to India Today that the couple was facing difficulties in their marriage, and they don’t want to bridge the gap as of now. She also stated that Saira took the divorce decision with a lot of pain.
