Chanchal Chaudhary was a familiar name. The woman, in her early thirties, would call week after week, asking for news of her friend, Priya Chaudhary, a single mother who she alleged had been killed by her lover — a man called Amit Gujjar she met on Facebook who later turned out to be Shamshad. Chanchal’s complaint — first filed in early April — largely fell on deaf ears, until she approached the Meerut SSP on July 14, who ordered an FIR into the matter.
When police landed up at Shamshad’s house on Wednesday, two bodies — that of 32-year-old Priya and her 10-year-old daughter — were exhumed from beneath the freshly-plastered drawing room floor.

The accused, Shamshad, is absconding.
Police are relying on Chanchal’s testimony and statements made by Shamshad when he was questioned earlier this week to put the pieces together.

The murders are believed to have taken place on March 28 this year.

According to police, Priya, a resident of Ghaziabad’s Loni who ran a beauty parlour, was divorced and lived with her daughter in a rented house in Modinagar. She met a man called Amit Gujjar on Facebook in 2015 and the two fell in love.
In 2018, Priya told Chanchal — her landlord’s daughter who she had formed a deep bond with — that she was moving in with Amit, who worked as a book binder.
Soon, Priya found out that Amit had lied about his identity and his actual name was Shamshad.

Their relationship soured after that. She would often confide in Chanchal.
The biggest blow came earlier this year when Priya learned that Shamshad was married. He had also sold off a flat Priya owned without her knowledge.
“On March 28 as well, they had an argument after which Shamshad strangled the mother and daughter,” said a police officer.
When Priya’s calls stopped all of a sudden and her phone was switched off, Chanchal called Shamshad. The man told her that Priya had left, prompting Chanchal to launch a search for her friend.
At the Partapur police station, the investigation officer (IO) allegedly tried to force her to drop the case. His role is now under scanner after an audio clip of his conversation with Chanchal emerged.
Meerut SSP Ajay Sahani told TOI that an inquiry had been constituted to look into the allegations against the officer.
Talking about why Shamshad wasn’t arrested earlier, the SSP said he was questioned several times but the allegations had not been proven.
“His statements were inconsistent but we did not arrest him since there was no evidence, only allegations against him. But a detailed investigation encouraged us to visit the house where we found the bodies. A search is on for the accused.”
