The couple who took wedding vows with each other in 1995, confirmed the news through a joint statement issued by their lawyer, Vandana Shah. Amid the separation announcement, rumours are currently making rounds on the internet, including claims about Rahman’s religious conversion being linked to his marriage.

The truth behind AR Rahman’s decision to convert to Islam

These rumours, however, are far from the truth. For the unversed, AR Rahman was born as AS Dileep Kumar, he converted to Islam at the age of 23, long before he met and married Saira Banu. His decision to embrace Islam was influenced by a deeply spiritual experience involving a Sufi healer who treated his father during his final battle with cancer.

In a 2000 interview with Karan Thapar for the BBC, Rahman dismissed all the reports and revealed, “There was a Sufi who treated him during his last days. We met him again 7-8 years later, and that’s when we embraced another faith.”

Besides this, AR Rahman’s choice to change his name was also rooted in spiritual and personal reasons. A Hindu astrologer suggested two names—Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahim—and Rahman chose the former.

“I instantly loved the name Rahman. It was a Hindu astrologer who gave me my Muslim name,” he added.

Later, his mother added “Allah Rakha” (AR) to his name after a dream, which became the iconic AR Rahman that the world knows today.

On November 19, AR Rahman took to his social media handle and announced the separation news along with the hashtag #arrsairabreakup. He penned an emotional role, which reads, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again.”
