Kolkata doctor rape case highlights: The Supreme Court today will hear a suo motu petition concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata. The case is scheduled to be the first item on the agenda, expected to begin at 10:30 am. A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case on August 20.

The BJP has demanded resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and called her “Mamata, the destroyer”. Meanwhile, students and junior doctors continued to protest at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital over the murder and alleged sexual assault of their female colleague on August 9 in Kolkata. Lawyers, too, have joined the protest.

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, reported ANI, adding a bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case on 20 August.

The CBI team probing the case of the woman doctor examines and conducts 3D laser mapping in the Emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Kolkata on 18 August.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police issued summonses to former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two prominent doctors for allegedly spreading rumours and revealing the identity of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, PTI reported.

In addition to these three individuals, the police have summoned 57 others for disseminating incorrect information about the incident. Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami have been specifically asked to appear before officers at the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar at 3 pm on Sunday.

Earlier on August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, triggering nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community.

On August 14, a mob vandalized the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar, leading security personnel to disperse the crowd.

To ensure law and order, the Kolkata Police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, starting August 18.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear as the first matter on Tuesday a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata amid the ongoing nationwide doctors’ strike over it.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, which had taken cognisance of the incident, has kept the matter on top of the cause list for hearing at 10:30 am on Tuesday.

The suo motu cognisance of the case, titled “In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and related issue”, assumes significance in view of the fact that Calcutta High Court is already in action and has transferred the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
