Baba Siddique Murder News Highlights: A Mumbai court on Monday sent the third accused in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, Praveen Lonkar, to police custody till October 21. The police had arrested Lonkar, a key conspirator in the case, from Pune on Sunday. He is allegedly the brother of the man behind the now-deleted social media post establishing the jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s involvement in the killing of the NCP leader. This comes after the city’s Killa court on Sunday sent two accused — Gurmail Singh and Dharmaraj Kashyap — to policy custody till October 21. The court had ordered a bone ossification test for Kashyap after he claimed to be a minor and it was later proved that he is not.

Who are the other accused? The third suspected shooter — Shivkumar Gautam from UP — is on the run. Police have also named a fourth suspect, Mohamed Zeeshan Akhtar from Punjab, who is suspected to have been working with the Bishnoi gang and  is believed to have received the contract to murder Siddique. The man behind the social media post, Shubham Lonkar who is currently absconding, along with Pravin, hired two of the three accused arrested when they were working at a scrap yard in Pune.

Political storm in Maharashtra: While seeking 14-day custody of the two arrested so far, police told the court that the murder was a well-executed plan, and they needed to determine whether the accused planned to kill anyone else in view of the Maharashtra Assembly elections expected to be held in November. The NCP led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday held the home department headed by his cabinet colleague Devendra Fadnavis responsible for the “dangerous security situation prevalent in Mumbai”.
