Jaya Bachchan is considered one of the actresses who made a significant impact with her acting during the 60s era. However, the actress took a long hiatus after marrying Amitabh Bachchan in 1973, as she chose to focus more on her family. Jaya made a remarkable comeback to the film industry with Govind Nihalani’s Ek Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Ma—19 years after her last film appearance. Her return generated buzz in the industry, with fans eager to know the reason behind her long absence. During an old interview, when Jaya was asked whether she received any offers while she was away from the spotlight, her response surprised many. She said, “You will be surprised, the answer is, I didn’t.”

Jaya’s return to films coincided with her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s comeback after a series of setbacks. While Amitabh downplayed the significance of their simultaneous returns, attributing it to coincidence, Jaya emphasised that she had never really stepped away from the industry. She explained, “I was backstage all the time. There is no question of a comeback because I have been involved in various other activities in the film industry.”

At that time, Jaya Bachchan was managing several responsibilities, including serving as the vice-chairperson of Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd and chairperson of The Children’s Film Society.

Why Did Jaya Bachchan Leave Bollywood?

Initially, it was revealed that Jaya Bachchan wanted to focus more on her family life, which led her to step away from the limelight. Amitabh also mentioned in an interview that Jaya’s decision to leave the film industry was entirely her own, and he had no influence over it.

In another interview, when Jaya was asked whether she sought her husband’s approval before returning to acting, she assertively replied, “He is my husband, not my guardian, for God’s sake.”

Though Jaya has now become more selective in her film choices, her presence in the industry remains impactful. Her legacy continues, and fans still cherish every role she plays. Jaya was last seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), which also starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra.

Meanwhile, Jaya Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan’s relationship with his wife Aishwarya Rai, seems to be in turmoil. Rumours are rife that the couple have separated. However, they have not made the news public.
