The Complex Case of Salman Khan, Blackbucks, and Lawrence Bishnoi

Twenty-five years ago, in 1998, Rajasthan’s Jodhpur witnessed an incident during the filming of Hum Saath-Saath Hain, which has left an indelible mark on the life of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. On the night of October 1st and 2nd, while the film’s cast was present in a jeep, Salman Khan allegedly shot two blackbucks in the Kankani village forest area. The actors involved were Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, and Neelam Kothari. The blackbuck poaching case was filed against Salman Khan, and it has since turned into a long-running legal saga, while also drawing the attention of an infamous gangster, Lawrence Bishnoi.

The Incident

According to reports, Salman Khan was driving the jeep with other actors as passengers. The poaching allegedly occurred in the village of Kankani, where two blackbucks were killed, leading to an uproar in the Bishnoi community, which considers blackbucks sacred. Locals reported hearing gunshots that night, and the villagers, led by witness Chhogaram, confronted the film crew. They managed to note down the license plate of the jeep, which later became a crucial piece of evidence. This jeep was hired by the film unit, further linking Salman Khan to the case. Additionally, a driver named Harish Dulani testified against Salman, stating that the actor had indeed shot the blackbucks, although Dulani later retracted parts of his statement, allegedly due to fear and threats.

The Bishnoi Community and the Blackbuck

The Bishnoi community has a deep connection with nature and wildlife, following 29 strict principles, one of which emphasizes the protection of animals and the environment. The blackbuck holds special significance to the Bishnois, who often treat these animals as their own children. This cultural reverence explains the outrage within the community after the incident. For them, the killing of blackbucks by Salman Khan was not just a legal offense but a moral and cultural violation.

Lawrence Bishnoi’s Vendetta

While the blackbuck case was ongoing in the courts, another dangerous element came into play—Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster from Punjab, who publicly declared his intention to kill Salman Khan. Born in 1993, Lawrence Bishnoi became a feared criminal with links to multiple gangs and a history of violent acts, including the murder of singer Sidhu Moose Wala. Bishnoi’s resentment toward Salman Khan stems from his deep-rooted Bishnoi identity and the blackbuck case. He believes that Salman’s alleged actions against blackbucks demand retribution, and he has consistently threatened the actor’s life over the years.

Despite being incarcerated, Lawrence Bishnoi has been linked to multiple assassination attempts on Salman Khan. In 2019, one of his gang members, Sampat Nehra, was sent to Mumbai to kill the actor but failed due to insufficient weaponry. A second attempt in 2022 was also foiled when another gang member conducted reconnaissance of Salman Khan’s farmhouse but could not execute the plan due to heightened security.

Legal Battle and Conviction

Salman Khan’s legal journey has been arduous. In April 2018, after two decades of court hearings and multiple bail appeals, Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in jail and fined ₹1 million for the poaching of blackbucks. However, just two days after his sentencing, Salman was granted bail, which further enraged the Bishnoi community.

Despite his conviction, Salman’s case remains entangled in the legal system, with appeals and petitions keeping the final verdict in limbo. Throughout these years, Lawrence Bishnoi’s threats have persisted, and he has even issued demands for Salman to publicly apologize at the Bishnoi temple in Mukam, Rajasthan. Bishnoi claims he would forgive the actor if he seeks forgiveness from their sacred temple, but until then, his mission to take the actor’s life remains.

Current Situation

Given the severity of the threats, Salman Khan has been provided with Y+ security, which includes armed guards, and he has upgraded to a bulletproof vehicle for his safety. As of now, Salman Khan continues to live under heavy security due to the ongoing threat from Lawrence Bishnoi and his gang, while the blackbuck case remains an unresolved chapter in Indian legal history.
