Pregnancy is a period of major physical and emotional changes for women, and the challenges continue even after delivery. New mothers must focus on their diet, weight, and mental health during the postpartum phase. The postpartum period begins right after childbirth, making the first 2-3 months vital for both the mother and baby. During this time, mothers need significant care as they return to their pre-pregnancy state, bond with their newborns, breastfeed, and attend regular medical check-ups. According to research, postpartum care can extend beyond seven months due to both physical and emotional recovery needs.
We spoke to Dr Madhulika Singh, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, and Dr Nitin Gupte, Gynaecologist at Apollo Spectra, to share essential post-pregnancy care tips for new mothers.
Postpartum Care:
“Pregnancy is a joyful experience, but postpartum recovery can be overwhelming for many women. Timely care is crucial as conditions like constipation, jaundice, infections, urinary incontinence, and postpartum depression can affect a mother’s well-being. Postpartum care involves more than just medical check-ups. It includes maintaining a well-balanced lifestyle with nutritious food, regular exercise, stress-reduction activities like yoga and meditation, and getting at least 8 hours of quality sleep,” said Dr Madhulika Singh.
Health Issues After Delivery:
Dr Nitin Gupte highlights that new mothers may experience sore breasts, weight loss, blood clots, and urinary issues, all of which can be distressing. Mental health challenges such as anxiety and mood swings are also common. To manage these, seeking professional help, talking to loved ones, and joining support groups can be effective. Self-care, including rest, nutrition, and light exercise, is vital, and addressing mental health concerns early can aid recovery.
Key Postpartum Tips:
Rest and Recovery: Childbirth, whether vaginal or cesarean, is taxing on the body. Ensure ample rest, with naps throughout the day, as nighttime sleep may be interrupted by the baby’s feeding schedule. Accept help from others and delegate household tasks.
Healthy Diet: Proper nutrition supports both recovery and breastfeeding. Focus on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Stay hydrated and limit caffeine and sugary foods, as they can impact energy and milk production.
Stay Active: Gentle physical activity, such as walking or postnatal yoga, can enhance recovery. Consult your doctor before starting any exercise regimen to ensure it’s safe for you. Regular activity improves circulation, boosts energy, and reduces symptoms of postpartum depression.
Monitor Mental Health: Hormonal shifts after birth may trigger mood swings or postpartum depression. It’s important to talk about your feelings and seek support when needed. Join a support group or confide in loved ones—asking for help is a sign of strength.
Establish a Routine: While flexibility is important, creating a routine for feeding, sleeping, and self-care can bring stability and help both the mother and baby adjust.
Good Hygiene: Proper hygiene post-delivery is essential to prevent infections. Follow medical advice for wound care (from a C-section or episiotomy), keep the perineal area clean, and change sanitary pads regularly. Always practice hand hygiene, especially when handling your newborn.
